Phones:
Cheme-Computer administers the phone systems in Chemical Engineering, covering all offices, labs, and common spaces. If you encounter phone issues, please feel free to contact us. IS&T can also assist with your issues at 617-253-1101.
Email Lists:
We manage department-based email lists, handling additions, deletions, and updates in coordination with HR and HQ offices. Unfortunately, I cannot list the email addresses on the website to prevent spam and phishing. However, I’ve included a link to the MIT WEB Moira site for those who need to edit lists or create new ones: MIT WEB Moira.
Lobby Displays:
We provide hardware support for lobby displays, but we do not manage the content. If you notice a display not functioning properly, please notify us at cheme-computer@mit.edu. For issues with content, contact the communication group at cheme-comms@mit.edu.
Purchasing:
We offer assistance with purchasing PC/system hardware and software intended for departmental research, administration, and education.
PC Cluster 66-070 (The Bunker):
We support the PC Cluster in 66-070 for both hardware and software issues. Access to the cluster is restricted and intended for students in ChemE classes requiring software that does not run on standard laptops, such as Aspen or Materials Studio. For access or to report issues, please email cheme-computer@mit.edu.
Security:
We highly recommend installing MIT’s virus and malware scan options, Sophos and CrowdStrike, to reduce the risk of malware, virus attacks, or system hijacking. Additionally, we advise backing up your data via CrashPlan, which is free for all MIT users. Below are the links for installation:
- CrashPlan: https://ist.mit.edu/crashplan/cloud-backup
- Sophos: https://ist.mit.edu/sophos/antivirus
- CrowdStrike: https://ist.mit.edu/crowdstrike/falcon
Please exercise extreme caution when dealing with emails. ChemE and MIT, in general, are prime targets for spam and phishing attacks. Pay close attention to email content before clicking any links or replying to messages.
If you receive an attachment from someone you don’t know or didn’t request, do not open it. Exercise caution and verify the sender’s identity before opening any attachments. This simple precaution can help prevent potential security threats.
Loaner Laptops:
We have a limited number of loaner laptops available for ChemE members. Priority is given to individuals experiencing system failures with a ChemE-issued system and need a replacement to continue their work or research.
Loaner Owls:
Loaner Owls Pro webcams are available for meetings outside of ChemE on campus in locations that do not have hybrid capabilities. Please contact cheme-computer at least 72 hours in advance of when you need the Owl Pro.
